zenGOT Safety Procedure
Commitment to health and safety are integral to zenGOT’s culture. zenGivers must be dedicated to safety, reducing the risk of illness or injury, and taking precautions to protect themselves and others by applying safe work practices. All health and safety incidents must be reported to zenGOT. More information on health and safety can be found at the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety.
Entering a Customer’s Home
If you are providing a service for a customer who isn’t home, get instructions by chat for entry/exit, including how to secure the home. If you feel unsafe (e.g. aggressive pet preventing entry), reach out to the customer and zenGOT to advise of the situation. If you’re not comfortable entering the home, feel free to leave and notify zenGOT.
Inside the Home
If you are inside the customer’s home and an unsafe situation arises (e.g. aggressive pet, exposed chemicals, renovations, potentially dangerous objects, or unwanted visitors), advise the customer and zenGOT, and leave if necessary.
It’s a good idea to know where pet transport materials are (e.g. kennels, carries, leashes, cages, etc.) in case of an emergency so that you can assist. If you are uncomfortable handling animals, seek assistance. If there are any pet concerns, notify the Customer through the chat and inform zenGOT.
Unsafe or Uncomfortable Situations
If anyone in a Customer’s home is behaving inappropriately (e.g. rude comments, harassment, abuse) or asks you do to something that makes you uncomfortable, let them know and ask them to stop. If they don’t stop or you feel unsafe, leave and notify the authorities (if warranted) and zenGOT once it’s safe.
Fire or Dangerous Situations
Locate fire extinguishers (if any) at the outset of your service. If a situation arises that is threatening to human health or safety or to property (e.g. fire, chemical spill, accident), please assist children, elders and pets to safety. Call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so and let zenGOT know when possible.
Chemical Products / Hazardous Materials or Equipment
If you are using chemicals, you must read labels prior and know how to handle them safely. Click here for information on household chemical safety. If using tools for Handy Person services, read manuals prior so that they are used properly and safely. Whatever the task, apply safe practices:
- Use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as appropriate including: gloves, safety glasses or goggles, clothing that protects skin, closed toe shoes
- Arrange adequate ventilation (windows and doors open when using chemicals)
- Keep products and tools away from pets and children; if leaving products or tools at the home, store so they are inaccessible to children and pets
As an independent contractor and zenGiver, you are expected to arrange your own insurance coverage including Worker’s Compensation, if required, in case of any injury or accident while on the job. If you break something in a customer’s home, you will be responsible for replacing the item.
